What is a root canal?
A root canal is a dental surgery procedure in which the damaged pulp and nerve are removed from the inside of the tooth to save it from decay and infection.
When a tooth’s pulp or nerve is damaged due to trauma or cracks in the tooth, bacteria can form within the damaged pulp chambers. If left untreated, the bacteria can cause tooth decay and infection, which can then lead to an abscessed tooth. An abscess is a pocket filled with puss that forms at the tips of the tooth’s roots. An abscessed tooth is very painful. Your mouth can swell and your breath can start to foul. Left untreated an abscess can cause sepsis, with the potential of causing organ failure.
After the pulp and nerve are removed through a root canal, the tooth is cleaned and sealed; a dental crown may be placed over the tooth to restore the appearance of the tooth and improve its strength.
If you’re wondering if you need a root canal, check to see if you have any of the symptoms of a decayed or infected tooth. Some of the symptoms include toothache from chewing, sensitivity to heat or cold, discoloration of the tooth and a swelling or tenderness in the gums surrounding the tooth.
